Meet Molly By: Valerie Tripp

Meet Molly By: Valerie Tripp

Molly is nine years old. her dad is a doctor in the war. Every once in a while Molly's dad would send letters to them but couldn't say where he was or has been. Molly's housekeeper, Mrs. Gilford, planted a victory garden in the yard. Molly and Linda and Susan (molly's friends) decided to be hula dancers for Halloween. When the girls were walking back up the driveway Ricky (molly's brother) sprayed them with a hose as a trick. Ricky had to give the girls his candy and could only keep one candy. The girls were deciding on what to do to get back at him. While Linda distracted Ricky, Molly and Susan grabbed his dirty cloths and put them in bags. Susan ran to get Jill (molly's sister) and Dolores (Jill's friend) to go outside. when they were walking down the driveway they got cloths dumped on them. At the back of the book they talk about WWI in the 1940's. Which I thought was very interesting.

The Battle for Iwo Jima By Tom McGowen

The Battle for Iwo Jima
By Tom McGowen

This book is about World War II and the capture of the island of Iwo Jima. This War first began in September in Europe. The United States only joined the war because the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. They first found out about the isIand of Iwo Jima because there were bombing raids coming from the Japanese. Then the battle of Iwo Jima began on February 19th. But before the battle had even started we already had ships sitting all the way around the island of Iwo Jima. We had captured one of their airfields on Feb.20. Then the Japanese started having Kamikaze attacks to our ships. Our soldiers captured Mount Suribachi and our soldiers marched our flag all the way up to the top of the hill and mounted it there. After that we pretty much had them. All we had to do after that was capture a few more bases and the war ended. The Japanese surrendered.

I give this book a 9 out of 10 and I thought that this book was very interesting.

“Surely you’re joking Mr. Feynman!” Adventures of a Curious Character

By Richard P Feynman

This book is an autobiography of Richard P Feynman, a physicist (a scientist of physics), a teacher at Berkeley and Caltech and who worked on the atomic bomb. Feynman died in 1988.

I thought this is the best nonfiction book ever. It is actually really funny. He talks about things that happened to him in college when he learned to be a safecracker, when he was the chief research chemist of the Metaplast Corporation (a metal plating company), when he tried to be a bloodhound, and other hilarious things he does.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being awful and 10 being great: I give this a 9.

Honor the Grandmothers

Compiled and edited by Sarah Penman

I recently read a book called Honor the Grandmothers compiled and edited Sarah Penman. This book contained four stories told by Dakota and Lakota women. They talk about the way they lived through happiness and hardships in their past. For example, one woman told about surviving the Wounded Knee Massacre. The massacre occurred when white soldiers surrounded a Lakota Indian tribe and started shooting and killing Indians randomly. This woman experienced death among family members and close friends. Wounded Knee is important today because it is just one of the causes for some of the strained relationships between Native Americans and white Americans that still exist today. The other talked about raising a family and what it meant to her, so there were many different things talked about. It was very interesting to learn about how these women dealt with life and how it differed from ours. I suggest this book to those who enjoy reading about different cultural history.

Maria helped hide two men for two years and after the war was over later, she married one of them. Henri helped hide his Jewish friends in his empty house because his family was hiding. Hilde helped thousands of children escape from the train station overnight into a home with other people so they wouldn’t die. Ferenc helped Jews by giving them fake documents from the underground. Liliane helped Jews hide in good homes where they wouldn’t get caught. Preben helped Jews escape to another country by sneaking them onto a friend’s boat.

The Holocaust by Abraham Resnick

The Holocaust by Abraham Resnick

The title of this book is The Holocaust by Abraham Resnick. This book is about real situation that happened during the holocaust. These event happened between the year 1933 through 1945.The holocaust is mainly about a man named Adolf Hitler who wanted to kill all the Jewish people in the world. This was a dream he had ever since he was a little kid. He first became the chancellor of Germany and then got power over all the Germans. Hitler made many laws against the Jews which made them worth nothing. He formed an army called Nazi‚s which stands for National Socialist German Workers Party. These people were like modern day gangs or thugs. He made concentration camps like Auschwitz. This camp is where people were placed to slowly die. Chelmno extermination camps began and 340,000 Jews and 20,000 Poles and Czechs were murdered by April 1943. This camp would exterminate people with Chemicals. There were gas extermination camps. Toward the end of the war the Nazi‚s were afraid of getting caught so they started doing death marches. One group of eight thousand people were lead to a cliff and they were either pushed or shot off the edge. There were so many more stories that could have been told. At the end of the war Hitler committed suicide. This book was very interesting and it was also very short. I would recommend it to people who like history.

I would rate this book an 8 out of 10 because it was really good

This book, Dear America: When Christmas Comes Again, is by Beth Seidel Levine. This story is about a young girl who crosses the ocean during WW1 and keeps a diary of her life as a brave “Hello Girl” on the Western Front. This is a sneek peek of this great, interesting book…December 25, 1917Christmas! It was a very special day. Father and Maman gave me the gift of my Army uniform . . . I tried it on immediately and modeled it for everyone. As I made my final turn, I stopped suddenly when I saw Sally standing in the doorway of the parlor with tears in her eyes. She was holding a tray of brandies and it started to rattle. Maman hurried over to her and took the tray. Sally sat with us and the room got quiet. “First William, and now Simone.” The air was so heavy that I thought I might cry, too. But Maman didn’t miss a step. She passed around the brandies and raised her glass. “When Christmas comes again, we shall all be together . . . and the world will be a safer place.”

Night by Elie Wiesel

Night by Elie Wiesel

I think that everyone should have to read the book Night by Elie Wiesel. It’s very historical, and I think that for a memoir it’s really easy to understand what the author is talking about.
The book Night tells a story of a boy during the Holocaust. It tells of his struggles, like how he was separated from his family and then how later, he found out he was the only one who survived the concentration camps. It’s a good book because the author is able to tell us what it was like to live through the Holocaust.
In the book, it tells of how cruel the people who were sent to concentration camps were treated. It tells us how they got to the concentration camps and what they were given to eat. There is plenty of other historic information throughout the book.
I think that it is important that people read this book. People who do read the book will have a better understanding of what the Holocaust was and it will help them better understand what exactly happened during this period in time.
This book can be really helpful to a lot of people. Whether it’s in school for a particular class, or outside of school for fun, I think that everybody should have to read the book Night.

I would give this book an 9 out of 10 rating.

My Brother Sam is Dead by: James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier
I thought this was a good book. This book was about a boy named Tim Meeker who's brother Sam goes off and enlists in the Revolutionary War. This book takes place in Redding Connecticut in 1775. Tim is faced with the challenge of what side to be on, either the Loyalists or the Patriots. This book tells a good description of what life was like back then and what the people had to go through such as, in this story, of what Tim had to go through after his father and his brother die. Another thing about this book is a lot of the people and places were real.

The peoples names are Miss Toshiko Sasaki, Dr. Masakazu Fujll, Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura, father Kleinsorge, Dr. Terufmi Sasaki, and reverend Tanimoto. A hundred thousand people died buy these six survived. How many people described it was a white flash going through the sky and boom a huge shack and what ever houses were standing were now ruble. Everything around the sight of the bomb was engulfed in flames and that’s how 50% of the people died was from burns. After the fires had burned themselves out scientists who weren’t hurt started doing testing on what was in the bomb and why all these people got really sick. In the end of the chaos 25% of people died from radiation poisoning and all the others died from falling buildings or other factors.

Dear Team 7I

The title of the book I have just finished reading is called “The Winter of red Snow” and the author is Kristiana Gregory. “The Winter of Red Snow” was a fantastic book! I absolutely loved it! It is a reading book for grades 6-8. This book has 170 pages. This book takes place in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1777. This book is about a 12-year-old girl named Abigail Jane Stewart. It is written as here diary. In the beginning, she experiences a new baby brother that is sick. She has nine siblings and not one boy has made it through the first winter. When I was reading this book, I was thinking about what the characters in this book were going through and how I could do what they do in the book. I felt sorry for Abby and here parents and siblings because they talked about their neighbors losing a loved one. In this book they talked about facts from the Revolutionary War and how they had to cut of soldiers feet when they had blood on their feet. I hope that Kristiana Gregory will write more books like this.

A boy at war by Harry Mazer

A boy at war is about a teenager named Adam who’s growing up in a military family. His dad is in the navy so the house is run like a ship. Since he’s a navy brat who travels he’s always been to schools where there were other military families, but now since he’s in Hawaii he’s surrounded by civilians. He has it rough fur the first few days, but this kid named Davi starts picking on him a little and oddly enough they end up being buds. So they start hanging around with all the other Hawaiian kids. You know, play football and go fishing. It seemed like it was going good but when he told his dad, he said that he didn’t want him to be hanging around them because there was a lot of friction between the U.S. and Japan and since over half of the population was Japanese that his dad didn’t want to take any chances. One day he doesn’t listen to his dad and goes fishing with Davi and one of his other Hawaiian friends. They decided to go fishing in Pearl Harbor. They were going to go fishing off the shore but they find a boat in the bushes. So they go out in the ocean and coincidentally the Japanese decide to attack while they are in the ocean. But that’s just the beginning. See where the war tales Adam from there…..

Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes

The title of the book I read is Johnny Tremain and it was written by Esther Forbes. This is a historical fiction book. I usually enjoy fantasy but this was a case where I really had to reconsider. I can tell from the text of this book that it is set somewhere right before the revolutionary war because it has the Boston Tea Party and even starts the war in Lexington and Concord. The main character is Jonathan Lyte Tremain but who just goes by Johnny. Johnny Tremain is just a silversmith apprentice dreaming of becoming a master someday until an accident injures his hand. He now has no work and no home but soon he finds himself entangled in a mess beyond what he thought would happen in his life. He is now helping the rebels and even assisting with the Boston Tea Party by chucking tea in the harbor. This is a very good book and I would recommend it for those of you who like historical fiction and things about the revolutionary war but I even recommend it to those who are just plain bored and have nothing to read. I hope many people take an interest in Johnny Tremain. Good luck and happy reading.

Love and Honor by Randall Wallace

Love and Honor by Randall Wallace

I read the book “Love and Honor”, a story, in which the main character (Kieran Selkirk) fights as a Russian cavalry soldier for his country that is only beginning to defeat British soldiers in 1776. At first he is in a sled fighting off wolves as he heads for a small city in Russia. Then he defends rich women with a polish servant against Cossacks as they head for Moscow to get promoted.

He and Gorlov, his friend, who helped him on his journey, fight the Cossacks in a huge battle defeating them.

Meanwhile he fell in love with the polish girl called Beatrice. At the third ball he attends, he wants to tell the Tsarina not to send troops to the colonies to put down our revolution. The Tsarina has other plans and tries to turn him into the Tsar. He fights back because he had married Beatrice and he doesn’t like the Tsarina. Her general puts him in a jail that no one has escaped from and Beatrice in a tower far away.

But Gorlov intervenes and saves him while acting like a Cossack leader. Then together they free Beatrice. In both those instances only two other officers help them.

The Tsarina puts her general in the jail after realizing that he is already married and doesn’t like her.

He goes on to fight back in the colonies and the Tsarina doesn’t send troops.

I believe this story is historical fiction and a good story for most people ages 16 and up but others can read it for its length of 402 pages. I hope you read it.

Air Raid - Pearl Harbor! The Attack that stunned the World By Theodore Taylor

The book I read is Air Raid - Pearl Harbor! The Attack that stunned the World. By Theodore Taylor. This book is about how the Japanese planned a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. When the U.S used their decoder in Washington, named Purple, they found out that the Japanese were planning an attack on a U.S Base and the Government did not think that it would be Pearl Harbor. The book tells how planes were spotted on the radar and nobody thought it was enemy planes so they let them approach, thinking they were friendly because they did not think anyone would attack Pearl Harbor. It tells about the events leading up to Pearl Harbor, how the U.S was taken by surprise, why it took them so long to defend themselves, where all U.S support planes and carriers were, how the Japanese signaled their troops in the air to get ready for an attack, how well prepared the Japanese were, the amount of destruction that was caused, and how the U.S retaliated.
